Toilet Repair & Installation in Cornwall

Running all night, won't flush, rocking on the floor, or a damp ring at the base? In a one-bathroom house that's not a "get to it next week" job. A licensed Cornwall plumber fixes it the same day with parts from the truck — or installs a new low-flow toilet and hauls the old one away. Price agreed before we start.

How to tell your toilet needs a plumber, not another jiggle of the handle

Most of Cornwall's housing stock went up between the forties and the seventies, and a lot of those bathrooms still have the original toilet or its first replacement. They don't fail all at once — they nag. The tank refills at 3 a.m., the flush needs two tries, the base feels soft underfoot. Each one is a part wearing out, and each one gets more expensive the longer it's ignored. Here's what to listen and look for.

Call us when you notice:

  • Running or refilling on its own
  • Weak flush or needs two flushes
  • Water or a stain around the base
  • Rocks or shifts when you sit
  • Gurgling from the tub when it flushes
  • Hairline crack in the tank or bowl

Toilet repairs we handle every week in Cornwall

Nine times out of ten it's one of these, and nine times out of ten the part is already on the truck.

Running toilet

A worn flapper or a fill valve that won't shut off. It wastes hundreds of litres a day and you hear it refill all night. Twenty-minute fix, new parts, done.

Clogged toilet

Plunger didn't do it? We auger it, and if the tub gurgles at the same time, we check the main line — because that's not the toilet's fault. "Flushable" wipes are the usual culprit.

Leaking at the base

The wax ring has given up, or the bolts have let go. Water's soaking into the subfloor every flush. We pull the toilet, reseal it, check the flange, and set it back level.

Weak flush

Rim jets scaled up with hard-water minerals, a chain set wrong, or a tank level that's drifted low. Usually an adjustment and a cleaning — not a new toilet.

Rocking or loose toilet

Loose closet bolts, a cracked flange, or a floor that's gone soft underneath. We fix what's actually wrong instead of jamming shims under it and hoping.

Handles, supply lines & shut-offs

Broken handle, a braided line that's bulging, a shut-off valve behind the toilet that hasn't turned since 1985. Small parts that turn into big puddles — swapped on the spot.

Toilet replacement in an older Cornwall home
Repair or replace?

We'll tell you straight — and most of the time the answer is "repair"

Flappers, fill valves, wax rings and handles are cheap parts and quick jobs. If that's what's wrong, that's what we fix, and you keep the toilet you've got. We're not in the business of selling you a new one because the old one has a scratch.

Replacement makes sense in a few cases: a crack in the porcelain (they only get worse), an old 13-litre or 20-litre tank that clogs every other week no matter what, parts that nobody stocks anymore, or a floor that's rotted under the flange and needs to be opened up anyway. In those cases a new low-flow unit pays for itself — Cornwall water isn't free, and a 1970s toilet uses three to four times what a modern one does per flush.

Either way you get both numbers — repair and replace — before we touch anything. You pick.

Picking a new toilet: the four things that actually matter

Bring your own from Home Hardware or Canadian Tire, or have us supply one — either way, measure first. These are the questions we ask before anybody buys anything.

1

Rough-in: 10" or 12"?

The distance from the wall to the floor bolts. Most of Cornwall is 12", but a lot of the older east-end and downtown houses are 10". Buy the wrong one and it won't fit. We measure in thirty seconds.

2

Low-flow or dual flush

Modern 4.8 L toilets clear better than the old 13 L ones ever did — the engineering caught up years ago. Dual flush saves more again. Either one takes real money off a Cornwall water bill.

3

Comfort height

A couple of inches taller than standard. For parents staying in the house, bad knees, or anyone who'd rather not squat — the most common upgrade we install, and nobody's ever asked to go back.

4

Round or elongated bowl

Elongated is more comfortable; round saves a couple of inches in a tight powder room off the kitchen. Check the door swing before you decide — we've seen it.

Older Cornwall homes

The part under the toilet matters more than the toilet

A new toilet set on a cracked cast-iron flange or a soft subfloor is a leak waiting to happen — usually about eight months later, right through the kitchen ceiling. In the century homes downtown and the post-war bungalows in Riverdale, we see it constantly: three layers of flooring, a flange sitting half an inch too low, a lead bend that somebody patched with putty in 1992.

So before the new toilet goes on, we check the flange, replace or extend it if it's shot, confirm the subfloor is solid, and set the toilet with a proper seal and new bolts. It takes an extra twenty minutes. It's the difference between a toilet that's fine for twenty years and one you're calling about next spring.

  • Flange repair, replacement and extenders for built-up floors
  • Subfloor checked and patched around the drain
  • New shut-off valve and supply line while we're in there
  • Old toilet hauled away, floor wiped down, caulked and done

One bathroom, one toilet, one call

Overflowing right now? Turn the little valve behind the toilet clockwise until it stops, throw a towel down, and call. For everything else — a slow flush, a wobble, a new toilet before the in-laws visit — book a time that suits you and we'll be there when we said, price agreed up front.

Got questions?

Toilet repair and installation in Cornwall — what people ask

How fast can you do a toilet repair in Cornwall?

Same day for most calls inside Cornwall, often within a couple of hours; a bit longer out toward Lancaster or Ingleside. A running toilet, a clog or a leaking base is usually a 30–60 minute job once we're there, with the parts coming off the truck. If it's the only toilet in the house and it's overflowing, say so when you call — that moves to the front of the line.

Should I repair my old toilet or install a new one?

Repair, usually. Flappers, fill valves, seals and handles are cheap and quick. We recommend a new toilet only when the porcelain is cracked, it's an old high-volume tank that clogs constantly, parts aren't made anymore, or the floor under it needs opening up anyway. You get both prices before we start and the decision is yours.

Can I buy the toilet myself and just have you install it?

Absolutely — plenty of people pick one up at Home Hardware or Canadian Tire and we install it. Two things first: measure the rough-in (wall to floor bolts, 10" or 12") and check the bowl shape fits the room. Or call us and we'll tell you what to buy in thirty seconds. If you'd rather we supply it, we carry solid low-flow and comfort-height models.

My toilet keeps clogging — is it the toilet or the drain?

If only that toilet clogs, it's the toilet: an old narrow trap, scaled rim jets, or wipes. If the tub gurgles or the basement floor drain burps when you flush, it's the main line — common on Cornwall's older clay sewer laterals with roots in them. We start with the auger and run a camera if it keeps coming back, so you fix the real cause once instead of plunging every Sunday.

Do you install comfort-height and dual-flush toilets in Cornwall?

Yes, both, and they're the two upgrades we install most. Comfort height is a couple of inches taller — a big help for seniors and anyone with bad knees. Dual flush cuts water use further than a standard low-flow. We'll also swap in a new shut-off valve and supply line while the old toilet's out, and haul the old one away.

Do you do toilet repair evenings and weekends?

Yes — 24/7 across Cornwall, Long Sault, Ingleside, Lancaster and the rest of SD&G, holidays included. A one-bathroom house with a toilet that's overflowing or won't flush isn't a Monday problem. Shut the valve behind the toilet, give us a shout, and we'll tell you how soon someone can be there.

Toilet repair and installation in Cornwall — what customers say

★★★★★

One bathroom, toilet overflowing at 9 on a Sunday night, three kids. Searched toilet repair near me and these guys picked up on the first try. He was in Riverdale inside the hour, cleared it, and showed me what the "flushable" wipes had done. Lesson learned, and no more calls since.

Toilet had been running on and off for months and I'd just gotten used to jiggling the handle. Toilet repair took him about twenty minutes — flapper and fill valve — and the price was what he said on the phone. Honestly figured he'd push a new toilet. He didn't.

Old 13-litre toilet in our house on Second Street, cracked at the tank. Had a new comfort-height one installed, and he found the flange was broken under three layers of flooring — fixed that too instead of just setting the new toilet on top of it. Old one gone, floor cleaner than before. Proper job.

Looked up toilet installation near me for our place in Long Sault — bought a dual-flush at Home Hardware and just needed it put in. He measured the rough-in over the phone before I bought it so I got the right one, installed it the next morning, new shut-off valve while he was at it. Zero drama.

Toilet in the basement kept clogging every couple of weeks. Instead of just augering it again, he ran the camera and found roots in the clay line out to the street. Fixed that section and the toilet's been fine since. First plumber who actually looked for the cause.

My mother's 86 and was struggling with the low toilet in her bungalow. Had a comfort-height toilet installed with a grab bar next to it. He explained everything to her directly, didn't rush her, took his boots off at the door. That's the kind of thing you remember.
